Rooshnyk
The vertical kilim, created in 2025, is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional 18th-century Ukrainian ritual cloth, the rooshnyk.
The composition reimagines the ornamental language of embroidery as a vessel of collective memory, symbolic coding, and sacred meaning.
The artist combines weaving, looping, derkannia (a traditional knotting technique), and embroidery to create a multilayered textile surface that seems to resonate with both historical depth and contemporary intent.
The rushnyk is transformed from a ceremonial object into a large-scale artistic plane that retains its protective function while becoming a space for contemporary visual storytelling.
